Theoretical Aspects of Import Substitution: Approaches Variety and Contradictions

Under modern conditions of economic development of the countries, implementation of import substitution policy is one of the most urgent and priority areas of government activity. This trend is of current importance especially at present in the Russian Federation, whose economy and production are developing under the pressure of adverse factors (geopolitical instability, sanctions pressure, and etc.). All this makes consideration of already formed theoretical approaches and contradictions concerning implementation of import substitution goals relevant. The purpose of the research is to study theoretical approaches to the definition of the concept of "import substitution", identify contradictions in the opinions of the authors and formulate one’s own conclusions in understanding the essence of the process and influencing factors. The article uses such methods of scientific research as monographic method, abstract-logical method, comparison and correlation methods, and discussion analysis. In the course of the study, the author comes to the conclusion that a number of contradictory and versatile definitions of this term was formed in scientific literature, and contradictions are also observed in the study of its nature and essence. The author also concludes that it is necessary to take into account the whole range of factors that, to one degree or another, may affect the development of the economic and industrial sphere (social, economic, political, etc.) when studying the essence of import substitution.Downloads
